News from the City University of London MA course in financial journalism

The Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation has received an update from Tom Felle at City University of London about this year’s MA course in financial journalism.

On 12th February Dr Paul Lashmar gave a guest lecture on how to conduct a financial investigation.

Francesco Guerrera, EMEA Head, Dow Jones Media Group, joined Anne Senior’s class on 19th February to talk about Dow Jones’ operation, and about reporting the global economy.

We had a very successful trip to the Bank of England on Monday 5th March to meet with officials and the head of public engagement, Mike Peacock. Students were briefed on the work of the bank, its role in regulating banking, controlling inflation, the impact of Brexit, and a wide-ranging general discussion about interest rates, inflation, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, the vast datasets the bank holds and may be going to open up for academics to use. Mr Peacock said he was happy to make it an annual event, and we will certainly take him up on it.

We held our fourth employability and networking event on Monday evening on the 5th March. We had representatives from Argus Media, Money Week magazine, Business Insider, EuroMoney Institutional Investor, MetalBulletin and GreySparks Partners along to brief students on their respective graduate schemes and summer internship programmes. Two students on the programme, Ben St Clair and Sharna Hawkins have already secured graduate scheme places, at the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg respectively.

The Marjorie Deane foundation funds studentships for City University of London’s MA course in financial journalism. The foundation also funds the Marjorie Deane Professorship in Financial Journalism at City, the first holder of which was Steve Schifferes.
