I recently started as US newsdesk editor at The Economist in New York, helping edit the daily news briefing and digital stories. My career trajectory so far is thanks largely to the Marjorie Deane’s internship programme. In the summer of 2018 I interned in the Economist’s New York bureau and then kept freelancing for the paper after my three-month fellowship ended. To any aspiring journalist, I’d say: apply for the internship! It’s a great launching pad. You’ll pitch stories from Day 1, learn from experienced colleagues and build a portfolio of clips.
